Adachi - Tokyo

Once considered one of Tokyo's "dangerous" wards, Adachi has shed its bad-boy image and is now proving all the naysayers wrong. It's an affordable area with plenty of recreational spots. Not to be missed are its annual new year celebration at Nishiarai Daishi Temple, the Iris Festival, and its large fireworks display. With Kita Senju as its main hub, life in Adachi give you direct access to central Tokyo as well as main cities in Saitama and Ibaraki Prefectures.

Adachi-ku: Adachi. That is where my husband and I live. Somehow Japanese people often raise their eyebrows when I mention this. Is it because of this melodious name? I love to say it out aloud. Adachi-ku, Adachi! But maybe, just maybe, it is because they don’t know what to do with this information. "Adachi-ku? Adachi? Must be some part in Adachi ward then." Somehow, I always end up in “weird” places in Japan.

Adachi Area Guide

Adachi is located in the north of Tokyo. It is home to one of the Three Great Temples, Nishiarai Daishi, which many people visit annually, especially on New Years. You can find many parks in the area such as the Park of Living Things and Toneri Park. The annual Firework Festival is held in the summer with over 13,000 fireworks in the sky and attracts more than 600,000 visitors. The primary station here is Kita Senju, as it serves the most train lines and includes shopping and dining options.
