The South Australian Company originally purchased this land. Then a Mr Brunskill built a rough house here in 1840 which he soon replaced with a small brick house. He then donated one acre of the land for an Anglican Church and cemetery St Matthews. The house had several owners who enlarged it a little in the nineteenth century then Thomas Roger Scarfe of the department store group (founded 1866) purchased the house in 1899. He demolished it and erected this grand mansion with Dutch gables…
