Also known as the Dutch Decoy Dog, the Kooikerhondje originated in the Netherlands in the 1500s. His name gives away his profession: “Kooikers” were duck hunters who used a particular kind of trap (called a “kooi”), and “hond” is the Dutch word for “dog.” He was originally trained to lure ducks into traps while his master hid in a blind.
The Kooikerhondje will not always immediately like strangers, instead choosing to retreat. But once they warm up to someone, the trust will be there for the rest of their life. The Kooikerhondje can make fine apartment dogs if exercised regularly, but a fenced yard would be more ideal. They have a medium energy level, yet are usually quiet when indoors.
