If Earth had been hit by this in July 2012, "we would still be picking up the pieces." It wasn't an asteroid, but one of the most powerful solar storms in at least 150 years. Solar storms produce high energy radiation that damage electronics: if strong enough they can fry GPS satellites and cause widespread blackouts. Luckily, it didn't hit us, and hit a telescope studying the Sun instead (which got some great data). #nasa #space #sun
