縁側のある間取り図例 I'm totally liking this modern interpretation of home plans with an engawa. Clockwise from left: tatami room, kitchen, western style bedroom, bathroom, bedroom, entrance hall into dining area, living room with engawa attached. You can actually see outside to the street from the living room! (This is rather uncommon in modern designs who favor solid walls for privacy to the front of the house.)

縁側の町家間取り図 - I don't want a traditional Japanese house like this. But this shows clockwise from top left: a kitchen, an 8 mat tatami room, the engawa, the garden, the bathroom, a 6 mat room and the entrance hall. The engawa serves to connect the tatami rooms to the garden while providing a corridor to the bathroom.
Another Misawa home interior. I like the "sky balcony" on the 3rd floor. The rest of that floor is just storage. It's pretty interesting that part of the first floor is a cathedral ceiling to the second. In a country where individual rooms are heated, instead of the whole house, I'm not sure how efficient that would be.
