Shell cameo, mid 19th century. Inspired by Guido Reni's paintings of this subject which shows Christ being presented to the people, crowned with thorns and wearing a purple robe. The crowd instead of taking pity on Him, screamed "Crucify Him" after the Roman Governor, Pontius Pilate said "Ecce Homo" or Behold the Man. The expression on the face of Christ is one of extreme suffering mingled with compassion for his persecutors... Diana Scarisbrick
