Jonestown Massacre, November 18, 1978, Guyana - The Jonestown Massacre, which had a death toll of 918 people, was the most deadly single non-natural disaster in US history until September 11, 2001. The Jonestown Massacre also remains the only time in history in which a US Congressman was killed in the line of duty.
The Cocoanut Grove nightclub fire was the worst fire disaster in American history. It occurred November, 1942 in Boston, MA. 492 people were killed and 100s more injured. The nightclub was filled to double its legal capacity when it caught fire. It was the result of a busboy using a match to replace a burned out light bulb. The fire took off in seconds. Many exits were blocked or locked, the doors opened inwards, victims were crushed in the revolving doors. Today it's a parking lot.

James Warren "Jim" Jones (May 13, 1931 – November 18, 1978) was the founder and the leader of the Peoples Temple, best known for the cult murder/suicide in 1978 of 909 of its members in Jonestown, Guyana, and the murder of five individuals at a nearby airstrip. Over 300 children were murdered at Jonestown, almost all of them by cyanide poisoning.Jones died from a gunshot wound to the head.
