Signed “Charles Rudy 1935,” the rabbits stand 23 inches tall each and are set on bases measuring 11½ by 11¾ inches. They have a wonderful, mossy aged surface. The provenance for these rabbits is from a Newport, R.I., estate. Not surprisingly, an identical pair is at the teahouse at Newport’s once-grandest Victorian mansion along Bellevue Avenue, Chateau-sur-Mer, the former home of the Wetmore family.
"She is infused with all of them, with their beauty, with their power, with their wholeness. None of them broken the way she is. It is like in the stories, she feels, the myths of transformation. She will not be a flower or an animal or a tree or a fountain like the woman who cried herself into one. She will rise up, wholly herself."
