Fred Hampton founded the Chicago chapter of the Black Panther party establishing a free breakfast program for children, free medical clinics, and persuaded the street gangs to stop forming a 'Rainbow Coalition.' The Church Committee proved that Hampton’s body guard was an FBI informant for Cointelpro. Prior to the raid which resulted in the death of Hampton he provided detailed information on the apartment. The majority of shots fired into the apartment were aimed towards Hampton’s bedroom.

The Oakland Community School (OCS) was one of the most well-known and well-loved programs of the Black Panther Party. Point 5 of the Black Panther Party’s original 1966 Ten Point Platform and Program, emphasized the need to provide an education that, among other things, taught African American and poor people about their history in the United States.
