Serpent in C by W. Schmidt- The instrument is claimed to have been invented by Canon Edmé Guillaume in 1590. It is a wind instrument and played similar to the recorder. (One blows through the mouthpiece and covers the holes with fingers). The original Serpent had 6 holes (2 groups of three holes). Eventually keys were added (kind of like a clarinet). Its' funny shape inspired the name....
