Gold ship pendant, enamelled in white and green, the mother-of-pearl hull surmounted by three masts rigging and unfurled sails. On deck, guarded by cannons Venus is seated while her son Cupid, winged, stands behind her. A pearl hangs below the hull, as does the anchor. Suspension loop above. Second half of the 16th century.
fig.: The image shows one of three 'Ballerina' clips made of white gold (the dancer's body) and diamonds (which sparkle on the ballerina's shoes, bodice and ribbon skirt). The figure (70x30mm) looks like a moment of movement frozen for eternity. The three Ballerina clips are Van Cleef & Arpels' high jewellery tribute pieces to Benjamin Millepied's ballet 'Reflections', premiere on 23 May 2013 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.
