HMS Hermes construction began during WWI and finished after the war ended. She was the world's first ship to be designed as an aircraft carrier. When WWII began in September 1939, the ship was briefly assigned to the Home Fleet. Japanese attacked it on April 9, 1939 was spotted near Batticaloa by a Japanese scout plane and quickly sunk by the Japanese aircraft.
