Yoshitoshi. Received back into Moon Palace. This print depicts a story from the late Heian period Taketori Monogatari (Tale of the Bamboo Cutter). The central figures of this composition are the old Bamboo Cutter, pictured kneeling in the front, and his adoptive daughter Kaguyahime (lit. ‘Shining Princess’) being guided by her sisters on a sea of clouds. The Bamboo Cutter found her as a baby girl, hidden inside a large section of bamboo.
