AN EARLY 20TH CENTURY CAMEO BROOCH The central circular agate cameo depicting a cherub scattering petals, to a rose-cut diamond border and white guilloché enamel frame further set with two old-cut diamond highlights, with a rose-cut diamond bow deisgn surmount, and suspending three pearl and diamond drops, circa 1900, Russian marks for gold, 4.7cm long
The onyx cameo represents the Three Kings (also known as Magi, or Wise Men) symbolic of earthly power and authority, adoring the Infant Christ. One of the Magi, kneels before the baby, who reaches out for his gift, watched by the Virgin Mary and by St. Joseph. The other two Magi prepare to offer their gifts. A choir of angels in the sky above rejoice above the ruins, symbolic of the Old Order, changed by the birth of Christ. (tbc)
