Austrian photographer Baron Raimund von Stillfried-Rathenitz (1839-1911), although now relatively obscure throughout the world, did indeed have a profound impact on Japan and its interpretation of photography. He is known for his expressive hand-tinted portraits of men and women at their daily routine, his successful studio in Yokohama, and the mentoring of several young Japanese photographers who, in turn, went on to fame and critical success.
