Tanabata festival 七夕 - celebrates the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi (represented by the stars Vega and Altair respectively) in Japan. According to legend, the Milky Way separates these lovers, and they are allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the lunisolar calendar. On 7th July, Japanese celebrate this day by writing wishes or poems on Tanzaku (small piece of paper) and hanging them on bamboo.
Another neon landmark formerly located at "The Bend," where Santa Clara Street turns northward along the El Camino Real route into The Alameda in San Jose, CA. Tiny's Drive In, also pinned on this board, was a neighbor across the street. The light show was a relic of the pre-freeway days, when the street was Highway 101. (Andy's has moved.)
