Boysenberry: Horticulturalist Rudolph Boysen began crossing blackberries and raspberries in Alameda, Calif., in the 1920s. He later gave up the project and moved on to growing oranges, but USDA pomologist George Darrow grew so fascinated with the fruit that he told berry farmer Walter Knott about it.
