The SS France, being too costly to operate, was sold to Norwegian Cruise Lines for conversion to a cruise ship. She served from 1980-2003 as the SS Norway. You may remember in 2003 when her boiler exploded in Miami, killing several crew. Here she is, 47 years after her launch, being scrapped on the beaches of Alang India.
The FERDINAND HASSLER is the newest vessel built for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The ship is named after Ferdinand Hassler, a Swiss born immigrant and the first Superintendant of the Coast Survey, the precursor to today’s NOAA. NOAA’s ship FERDINAND HASSLER will be commissioned during the OpSail 2012 Virginia events and NOAA’s Atlantic Operations Center off Brambleton Ave. will be the center of environmental programs throughout the weekend of June 8-11, 2012.
