Rudi Gernreich (1922 - 1985) The Austrian-born, American designer was originally a modern dancer. From this occupation, he applied to his fashion designs a feel for tightness and flexibility: garments in which women could move and liberate themselves. Fuelled by his free spirit, he created the thong, the first designer jeans, the unisex monokini and the first see-through clothes.
