On July 17 each year, the floats (hoko) of the Gion Matsuri (festival) are pulled around a huge square course from Shijo, onto Kawaramachi, then onto Oike, and finally onto Karasuma before they are returned to their original locations. To start the day, a small child uses a sword to cut a rope (he has help).
