LETTRISM (French avant-garde movement, established in the mid-40s). Central innovations of Letterist film were: 1. carving of the image where the film-maker would deliberately scratch or paint onto the actual film stock itself. 2. Discrepant cinema where the soundtrack and the image-track would be separated, each one telling a different story. In addition, the Letterists utilised material appropriated from other films, a technique which would subsequently be developed in Situationist film.
