Ballard Locks - heading out toward Puget sound and the ocean. When the locks close around them, water will be pumped out until they are level with Puget Sound. At that point, the outer lock will be opened, allowing them to proceed.
Seattle, WA - Ballard Locks (Hiram M. Crittenden Lock) - allow boats to travel between the salt water of Puget Sound and the fresh water of the Ship canal and on to Lake Union and Lake Washington. Grounds are great for a picnic and concerts are occasionally held in the adjacent Botanical gardens. Also a visitors center for history buffs.
