A British native, the purple lilac was imported in 1750. In 1919, it beat out the apple blossom, purple aster, wood lily, and other blooms to become New Hampshire's flower. via NH.gov
'MISS ELLEN WILLMOTT' (Syringa vulgaris): 19th Century double French. Named for a wealthy English plantswoman who was one of only two women (out of 60 recipients) to receive the first Victoria Cross Medal of Honour in 1897.
