Dr. José Celso Barbosa was born on July 27th, 1857, in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. He was a medical doctor, sociologist, political leader, and was also the first black to attend Puerto Rico's prestigious Jesuit Seminary. Barbosa is known as the "Father of the Statehood for Puerto Rico" movement. He founded the Puerto Rican Republican Party in 1899 aftermath the Spanish-American War in which Puerto Rico became a territory of the U.S.

Julia Constancia Burgos García was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico on February 17, 1914 (d. July 6, 1953). “...the best known female poet in Puerto Rico...she graduated from the University of Puerto Rico as a teacher. She also studied in Havana and later moved to New York. At age nineteen her first verses were published. Her best-known poem is “Río Grande de Loíza”. De Burgos published several books. She received several honors and homenages before and after her death.”
Famous Poet- One of Puerto Ricos most famous poet is named Enrique Laguerre. He was born in Moca July 15 1905. He graduated from the University of Puerto Rico with a degree in Arts; MA in 1941, and a doctoral degree in Arts from the University of Columbia (1949) in New York. His first novel was called "La Llamarada"! It was about political, economic and social conditions that prevailded in the island.He was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1999. He died on June 16, 2005.
