General der Artillerie (later promoted to Generaloberst) Walter Heitz commanded VIII Armee-Korps, which was to land in the first wave of the Operation Sealion assault. VIII Armee-Korps consisted of 6 Gebirgs-Division, 8 Infanterie-Division and 28 Infanterie-Division. Heitz was captured at Stalingrad in January 1943 and died in Soviet captivity.

Knight's Cross on 29 March 1942 as Oberst im Generalstab and chief of the general staff of the XXXXIII Armeekorps, 428th Oak Leaves on 20 March 1944 as Generalleutnant and acting commander of the III. Panzerkorps, 135th Swords on 26 February 1945 as General der Infanterie and commander-in-chief of the 17. Armee.
