Elizabeth’s father, James VI of Scotland inherited the throne of England in 1603 just 3 years before this portrait is believed to have been painted & the opulence in which the young princess is garbed should have dispelled any snobbish notions that the English court and populace might have had about the new Stuart rulers who had come from what was believed to be the rather barbaric lands beyond the border.
Anne of Denmark (1574-1619), Queen of James I ~ Signed and dated 1837 ~ by Henry Pierce Bone (1779-1855) ~ Henry Bone made a notable success during his career of producing historical sequences of portrait enamels for exhibition and sale. This enamel is from the series of English Sovereigns and Queens from Edward III to Queen Victoria which was completed by Henry Pierce Bone after his father’s death in 1834. Originally painted by Paul van Somer (ca.1576-1621)
