An Antique Royal Ruby Ring, circa 1870. Formerly the property of Queen Marie José (1906-2001), a gift from the scholar and bibliophile, Tammaro de Marinis. There have only been three Queens of the united Italy and that this important ring belonged to the last gives it an historic interest in addition to its intrinsic value.
Queen Marie José Royal Ruby Ring, c. 1870, gold, silver, diamonds, ruby (8.48ct). When Belgian Princess Marie-José married the Prince of Piedmont, future Umberto II in 1930, she received jewellery inherited from his grandmother, Queen Margherita. He chose the ring for Princess, married to the heir to the throne of Italy, for the royal character of the “pigeon-blood” ruby from Burma within its diamond frame blended harmoniously with Queen Margherita’s bequests.
