dated 1554 - Old St. Peter's. Rome Floor plan #architecture #design - in the 4th century AD CONSTANTINE I the GREAT went to great pains to build the basilica on the site of Saint Peter's grave, and this fact influenced the layout of the building.
EARLY CHRISTIAN ARCHITECTURE- Reconstructed drawing of the basilica of S. Giovanni in Lateran, Rome, AD 313. It was built from an imperial palace. It consisted of five aisles, the central one was higher because to let the light in from a clerestory. Two rows of 15 huge columns created the colonnade of 75 meter long. The whole structure was covered with a wooden roof. At the end there was a large apse, where the clergy would sit. It is little of the original building left.
Ancient Rome: Supercity. I love the study of Ancient Roman architecture, art, history and the incredible society they built. I even enjoyed using the archives at the NY Public Library to research traditional recipes from the time period. The Romans used a sauce from dead fish guts to season their food. It is akin to today's Worcester sauce. Who knew?
