La Dolce Vita -- Isn't that Anita Ekberg?

Italian, and therefor not technically film noir, 1943's "Ossessione" is Luchino Visconti's take on James M. Cain's novel "The Postman Always Rings Twice." This movie was made totally removed from Hollywood's film noir cycle. Though it does not have the visual style we expect in noir, it captures the sense of an implacable fate closing in on characters so consumed by desire that there is no decision too boneheaded for them to make. This neo-realist, non-noir is paradoxically a great noir.
