Coins featured are so-called Maria Theresa thalers. The coin was widely used for trade in the Middle East. This is a very, very good quality Omani necklace. Made in the early to mid 20th c, with a silver content of 85%, and real gold also used. The tube-like box at the bottom is a "Koran holder" (often called "hirz") which was due to hold verses from the Koran to protect the wearer. The piece is in perfect condition. Shown in Truus Daalder, *Ethnic Jewellery and Adornment*, p. 386.
