A leading modernist photographer in the 1930s & 40s, when few women had the privilege, Olive Cotton began her career in the heady, between-war years of cosmopolitan Sydney. But not long after the end of World War II, she opted out of her privileged, comfortable life, and chose to move with her husband and two children to country NSW. She re-emerges in the 1980s, thanks to the research of a group of Melbourne feminists who curated a travelling exhibition on Australian women photographers.
