"Nativity" by Giotto 1315-20 Fresco North transept, Lower Church, San Francesco, Assisi As is common in Medieval and early Renaissance depictions of the Nativity, Giotto conflates elements of the story of Jesus' birth from both Luke and Matthew. Note, too, the depiction of what I presume is a midwife helping to feed the Christ child after another awaits to give him a bath, thus serving as a playful counterbalance to the other pictoral symbols emphasizing Jesus' divinity.
