Japanese sword, Katana 刀 is a short range exceptionally well-balanced weapon: not for the faint of heart. When I teach sword fighting, it's with wooden practice katanas. Do not fight with replicas; they will get notched blades and will get too damaged. For "live-steel" competitions you need the blade to be at least triple-folded for it to be battle ready.
