In 1897 the press began to spread ill-founded stories that the young ballet performer had become the old Belgian King Leopold II latest mistress and the King was nicknamed "Cleopold". Cleo and her mother vehemently denied the accusations. Nonetheless, the accusations stuck and damaged her private reputation, if not her professional career.
