The sheltie yawn. If your sheltie is yawning a lot when you attempt to interact with them, this is actually an avoidance mechanism. The yawn enables them to break off contact without being confrontational. In other words, this is a very passive way of saying, "Please leave me alone. I am unsure of what is expected of me and don't know what to do." When you see this, it is best to give them space and approach again later in a more subtle or gentle way.
