This mask originates from the Oruro region of Bolivia. La Diablada is a masked dance to appease the evil spirit of the mines, and developed an additional meaning after Christianity took hold in the culture - it was adapted to represent good (Archangel Michael) versus evil (Lucifer).

Carnival, Oruro, Bolivia. The devil mask captures the essence of the Oruro Carnival. The devil or Supay represents the Andean pre-conquest underworld figure that was lord of the hills and transmogrified by the Christians as the Devil. Masks like this are worn with equally ornate costumes in the big parade.
