The Mexican painter Frida Kahlo was famous for her naive/primitive style of art, notably her self portraits, depicting the emotional effects of her pain and semi-invalid status and compromised reproductive capacity. Her painting is influenced by several schools, such as surrealism and realism, as well as symbolism. Her pictures were also influenced by Mexican folk art.
Edward James' Las Pozas near Xilitla, Mexico - Between 1949 and 1984, James built scores of surreal concrete structures with names like the House on Three Floors Which Will in Fact Have Five or Four or Six, the House with a Roof like a Whale, and the Staircase to Heaven. There were also plantings and beds full of tropical plants, including orchids.
