Vardzia (Georgian: ვარძია) is a spectacular cave monastery site in Samtskhe-Javakheti region in southern Georgia. It holds special significance for Georgians because it is associated with Tamar the Great (Georgian: თამარი), the most famous woman in Georgian history. As the first woman to rule Georgia in her own right she held the title mepe ("king").
