The Japanese super battleship Yamato under steam during trials in 1941. She and her sister ship Mushashi were the heaviest and most heavily armed battleships ever constructed. At 72,800 tons displacement, the Yamato carried a battery of nine 18.1-inch guns and was bristling with secondary armament. Yamato was sunk in April 1945 under US attack from sea and air 180 n.m. from Kyushu island.
French Battleship Richelieu in New York in April 1943 after joining the allies following the invasion of North Africa in November 1942. She had a badly needed refit there; most of her subsequent war service was in the Indian Ocean / Pacific. She carried all her main 15 in guns forward of the bridge.
