It is a brittle metal with a silvery white color but is often seen in air with many iridescent refraction hues of its oxide surface, and the most naturally diamagnetic element and has one of the lowest values of thermal conductivity among metals. It is slightly radioactive. There is an increasing use of bismuth alloys as a replacement for lead.
