1750 Dutch embroidery sampler from Hindeloopen. Samplers were made by girls between 6 and 12 years. Until late in the 19th century, all textile was sewn at home, and decorated and marked for inventory with embroidery. Samplers on the appropriate stitching techniques were practiced before. Embroidering the alphabet also taught the girls to learn to read. They learned Gothic letters because the Bible was printed in this style. A sampler is not a folk art, but a learning tool.
