Lutzow, the first sister, lacked the tower bridge of Scheer and the third ship, Admiral Graf Spee - later removed from Scheer when she and Lutzow were re-designated as heavy cruisers in 1940. Bridge structure of 11 in 'pocket battleship' Admiral Graf Spee, scuttled after the Battle of the River Plate in December 1939. The plaque reads 'Coronel' after the Admiral's famous 1914 victory. This type of tower was later removed from sister Admiral Scheer in favour of a stepped platform design, as it was found to catch the wind badly. The first ship of the class (Deutschland / later Lutzow) was built with such a design anyway.
