The bright star Alnitak (Zeta Orionis, the easternmost star in Orion's belt) is at the center of one of the most remarkable and picturesque regions in the sky. The radiation of this hot star excites the gas in the surrounding nebulae and causes it to emit light. The nebula strip running south from Alnitak is the designated IC 434, into which the famous dark nebula called the Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) protrudes from the eastern side. The nebula's shape resembles the head and neck of a…
And for once in my life, floating under the lanterns, waiting for them to disappear like stars disappear with day, I feel like I don't need to prove anything. I could stay lost forever because I don't feel lost. I will float along this river until it empties out to sea and will not worry about the wind tangling my hair or the salt stinging my scrapes. This is freedom.

The star cluster Hodge 301 is inside the Tarantula Nebula. This nebula is located in our galactic neighbor, the Large Magellanic Cloud. Many of the stars in Hodge 301 are so old they have exploded. They are blasting material into the area around them at speeds of almost 200 miles per second! The high-speed matter is plowing into the nebula. The impact shocks and squashes the gas into long strands. | Star Clusters | Kids Discover
