The tanuki is a raccoon dog yokai popularized in folklore as a trickster and joker. The tanuki yokai is based off a species of raccoon dog that live only in Japan. The tanuki is depicted in art and stories as being a large-bellied, sake-drinking, shape-shifting tricksters who wears a cone shaped hat and carries a promissory note. Tanuki are also depicted as having enormous testicles, which are meant to symbolize financial luck and prosperity.
