Author of some of the 20th Century's most romantic songs, including "Let's Stay Together," (Reverend) Al Green is another of soul music's most beloved singers. After a freakish assault by his then-girlfriend, followed by her suicide, Al turned to recording exclusively gospel music, refusing to perform his r hits in concert for many years. He returned to his secular songbook in the '80s and in 2008 released the acclaimed "Lay It Down" album, produced by Questlove of The Roots.
Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) was a composer of the Romantic Era, but he looked to Classical composers and Beethoven in particular for his inspiration. He was a master craftsman of symphonies, concertos and chamber music, with many songs and pieces for solo piano.
