Clark County firefighters extinguish the last flickers of flame that engulfed the Caesars Palace marquee, March 27, 1980. The blaze erupted shortly after 12:30p.m. and caused $200,000 worth of damage. The 70-foot fluorescent sign was ignited by an electrical short as workmen were changing the headliner from Paul Anka to Tom Jones. Jones was the headliner two years earlier, when another small fire engulfed the sign.
This Hilton thrived when Elvis was the main act. The first brand on the neon was "THE INTERNATIONAL HOTEL" which went bust due to its location off the Vegas strip. Baron Hilton sent , Henri Lewin to fix the situation when Hilton acquired the property. Lewin had his doubts about sinking millions into a hotel off the beaten path.
