The Claddagh, Ireland (1913) Marguerite Mespoulet, a beneficiary of one of Kahn's travel grants, was the Archives' only female photographer. Her photographs of impoverished Irish fishermen, workers and peasants--particularly women--captured both the extreme poverty and the admirable resilience of an increasingly precarious culture, threatened by emigration and illness.
