Before being rebuilt in 1955, the temple was burned down in 1950 by a 22 yr old monk, Hayashi Yoken, who then attempted suicide behind the building. He survived, and was taken into custody. He was sentenced to seven years in prison, but released bc of mental illnesses. Gold was an important addition to the pavilion because of its meaning. Gold was to mitigate & purify any pollution or negative thoughts and feelings towards death.
