Japanese wooden Hyakunin-isshu Karuta (playing cards). The origin of Uta Karuta dates back to the early 1600s, about half a century after the first Western cards had been introduced by Portuguese sailors. However, before this game was created, similar ones were played by the noble and the high class by using sea shells, on which a text was painted.
