30 Awesome Vintage Military Nurse Recruiting Posters. The American government put a lot of thought and artistic talent into creating posters to try and recruit women for nurse service through the Red Cross. It only makes sense that they would put just as much effort in attempting to recruit women to fix up the American boys when they get wounded in the war effort.

In 1861 after seeing young soldiers fighting in the American Civil War die needlessly due solely to lack of timely medical care, Clara Barton rallied other women and fought to have women working in the field army hospitals. Barton retired to Switzerland, where a new international organization had formed to provide humanitarian relief. Barton returned to the USA and with the to establish the American Red Cross.
